Almost Famous...

Er, nope, not me. It´s the movie we got to see at FCG last saturday. Joni didn´t make it unfortunately. Almost Famous... hm... I didn´t really like it that much. I mean, I enjoyed myself, it´s not boring or anything. But I never really believed the whole Penny Lane being their "I retired" Hot Chick at age 16 (or is it because the actress doesn´t come close to looking 16?). Nor the whole "we´re taking you serious boy, you come travel with us, you go and write an article for RS" - I know it´s based on a true story. Well, that only makes it worse!

Almost got into a fight over the phone with a close friend during the afternoon, resulting in a surprise visit right before FCG, so I got there over an hour late. Called Gert to say so, tell them to go ahead if I was the only one being that late. Re: the Almost Fight - it was a good thing to talk things through live. My mood made about a 160 degree change during that visit.

Sunday and Monday were all about translating. I had to finish it before Tuesday, especially since I was supposed to meet up with Tristan Monday eve, the boy I met in Edinburgh. At 4pm I had to translate another 10 pages though, plus I still had to edit the whole book. So sent a message saying “not gonna finish it before late, not gonna be able to pick you up” (already had said beforehand I wasn´t sure I´d make it). No answer in return. So sent a message yesterday morning “wanna meet up at 6pm at central station?” No answer. Waited at 6 just to be sure for about ten minutes. Then walked away.

Decided on having coffee at our Sunday Spot, I knew Patrick would be there – he had swapped his eve (his team plays Champions League Thursday). It was CROWDED. So after chatting a minute or two, I moved on. And enjoyed a luuuurvely lazy evening at home... Just what I needed! (According to Bob I need a good shag. He told me so yesterday. Ha, ha. “You don´t know when I had my last shag!” It was funny though. This morning I almost bumped into him down the hall. "You know what you need, right?" "Yeah, a good shag!")

Gotto go back to work. Barbie´s waiting (ugh, two ozalyds, help me out!). Tonight dinner at Mark´s. He´d better not think along the same lines as Bob.

Mortale @ Winston

Met up with Justin quarter to nine. It wasn’t very busy yet, but the atmosphere was already A okay. During the evening, it got busier with each passing half an hour. Obviously most people came to see Voicst. Within moments we were drinking beers with Gert, Gerrit and Freek, and later on Ilse, Josephine and Skalke (how do you write those names anyway?). Host Joost dropped by every now and then to talk with Gert. I talked a bit with Joppe ("you were in Pollux" - I was). Smoked 2 cigars. Shared the last (3rd) one with Justin. I hate people that smoke cigarettes though. Coz after finishing my last cigar, he went and got him a new shitload of cigarettes. And I don't smoke those. Fuck! Back to Mortale, back to the bands:

Sallyskunk
There’s nothing wrong with this band. Their songs are "finished", nothing to add or anything. It’s just… not surprising. Nothing new. Justin thought they were The Doors mixed with The Beatles, but he’s kidding half the time.

Ninginkata
Er… nope. I like Marijn’s voice better anyway. Host Joost wanted to introduce them by mentioning some other supergroups, so Gert and I helped him out by remembering some (like De Poema’s, Travelling W.).

Voicst
Of course this was everything you'd hope for. Yes! One song I noticed the small wooden thingy Joppe used. I hadn't noticed it before, gonna have to listen to the album. I liked the sound of it though.
One song didn't really rock, some hesitation on stage, especially at the end. Don’t remember its title.
When Tjeerd said something like "almost the last song" I blurred out "Porn!". Which was funny (I think), coz that’s exactly the song they started. They ended their gig with Chemical Push.
Joppe asked if I’d be dancing again. Except for ‘hesitating song’, yet particularly during those last two, I definitely did.

What I like about Voicst as well, is that each time, they bring their songs slightly different. That must be a very, very difficult thing to do for a band? Anyway, it’s something I’m really impressed with. They do surprise you every time. They keep it fresh. So you can come to their show over and over again. Like next sunday, Club Funday, Patronaat. It's free!

DJ
Started out with very old songs, songs your mum ‘n’ dad danced to (if ever). Then some crappy songs, mixed with The Strokes, The White Stripes, etc. Justin, Freek, Ilse, Josephine and I danced pretty much all night.

Obligatory yada yada stuff
Started talking to this guy Eric. He just got back on the market 2 months ago, after a 2 years relationship. "So you’re still mourning." He was obviously flattered, but didn’t dare do or say anything. Later on this kiwi wraps his arms around me, and starts to dance with me. Saying I had been looking at him across the dancefloor. Right. Had never seen the guy in my life. Tells me he’s from Wellington. His name’s Paul, apparently a lawyer (d’oh??). Corny convo: "I’ve got a soft spot for kiwi’s." "I’ve got a soft spot for you". Yeah, right. Of course you do, you drunk fart (cute though). Dragged me to the bar, bought me a Wodka Red Bull, tried to persuade me to come home with him. "I live just around the corner." "What, in a hostel? Or hotel?" He reminds me: "I’m a lawyer!" "Aaaah, you live in an apaaartment!" His punch-line: "It’s not like I can do anything right now, I just want to sleep next to you." "You wouldn’t recognize me walking down the street tomorrow if it would safe your life!" The WRB finished him off. He dropped his head on the bar, and they asked me to take him out. Which i didn’t, coz apparently I had to leave my WRB. Bye bye Paul, hope you got home safely. Plus, Justin had come to tell me Freek and Josephine had left already, so I went to keep him and Ilse company.

Tried to catch the 0342 train to Leiden, but he missed it. I figured as much, so I had waited outside, and we talked some more. We both enjoyed ourselves heaps at Winston tonight. It was only those moments alone at the toilet my sweet sorrows jumped straight back at me, after which I hurried myself up the stairs back to my friends again. Sometimes it’s hard to get things off your mind. Being surrounded by happy people, makes it so much easier.

I left Justin at the train station around 4, got to bed 4.45. Sent a texting message to another friend to get rid of some nagging thoughts. Fell asleep the moment I hit the ‘send’ button. Woke up at 5.15 when Justin texted me to tell me he was in Leiden. Drowsily I replied, then I fell asleep again. It had been a long day. It had been a great night.

Last night was all about sexual fantasies. Your heart starts thumping and if you'd had a cock, it would be throbbing. Such an unfortunate thing to lust after. If only you could get it right around the corner.

Actually, not every kiwi thinks it´s funny; after numerous angry phone calls about these billboards, they had to be removed.

Back in the USSR

Song came to mind, dunno why.
Anyway. It's already 10.20- HOW COME?! How is it possible for time to fly at certain moments... Ugh. Never mind. B.O.R.ING. Yeah, yeah, I know.

Haven't told anything about Paradiso yet, have I? And this weekend was fun, too - a friend of mine moved to another house, and I helped out. Helped Patrick fixing two big cupboards or whatever. Did most of the bed with Klaas Jan. (Me and a screwdriver! Turned out we get along quite nicely.) Ciaron and Patrick slept on it already, so KJ and I did a good job, yihaa.

Sunday I got to see Lost in Translation, so there's loads to talk about.
Another song comes to mind: you're lost, little girl...

Now I really REALLY have to get working on my translation. That dumb darn deadline (alliteration, anyone?) is Feb 23rd, aaaagh! (Dumb for I think it's not anywhere near its printer's deadline.)

WORK!! WORK!

K-Tsjoem!

No, I'm not having a cold, I went to Paradiso tuesday to see some bands: Persil, Cinerama (some of them; David Gedge & Simone Cleave - as if I know who they are, d'oh, not!), Melys, Cyozlab.

De Tap
It was pouring down when I made my way to De Tap*, to have a drink with Niels before going to Paradiso. Sitting at the bar, it was quite cosy. Maybe because there were hardly any customers, due to the weather. Ron wasn't working, I don't think I'd ever seen this guy. He immediately expressed his surprise, when I got in smiling, saying "Hey!" grinning, even though I was soaked to the thread (as far as I know, that's not an expression or anything, I'm just making it up while I'm writing, and I like the sound of it, so there!). Anyway, I liked this guy too; taking directions from other customers, he rummaged for a cigar for me (rummaged about sounds so much better, doesn't it?). El Cigarro: I got quite a big one - which pleased me loads (why does this sound so sexual?), coz the bigger, the softer the taste. (Ugh.)

At one point I heard an intro of a TERRIBLE song. "Niels, is this...?" "Yep." I asked the guy working to please skip the song. No questions asked, he immediately did it! I uttered my surprise. He said: "You really think I care?" Meaning: he couldn't care less whether or not he got to hear that song. I can't remember now which one it was, and I hope I won't remember nor hear it any time soon. AARGH! Now I DO remember! It's like you throw in a quarter... And this fucking jukebox starts to play: "The road ahead is empty..." I so totally completely etc DISLIKE that song. It's whining! Annoying! Er... You get my drift.

*The crowd at De Tap is not cool, or hip or anything. Reading this, must make you shiver even more! Brr! Yet I really like it there. Good vibes. Real nice people working there. Love to sit outdoors, right next to the door, as soon as it's slightly warm (or really warm for that matter). Watch the world go by (it's close to this square popular by mainly tourists from out of town or out of this country). Two tables I really like to sit at, as well. Bla bla... Yada yada yada...

PARADISO
After an hour... ETC. I'll get back to you. Gotta start workin' on my translation now! Already got an encouragement sms (i.e. texting) while I was still reading, and now I'm updating my blog. "You're terrible, Muriel!" Gosh, love that movie.

It's a good thing I'm not going up north tonight already. Man, didn't get to sleep until 4.30am. I had fun though.

Listened to High Fidelity OST this morning, now Horowitz falls silent (A Baroque & Classical Recital Vol. 5). Thought about listening to Norah Jones' new album (which I don't really like - yet?). Decided against it. Am now listening to Air, not Talkie Walkie; 10 000HZ Legend.

Compared to Cat Power, or Nina Nastasia, I think nothing's left of Norah Jones. Nevertheless, I loved her 1st album.

Goodmorning ya all!
(And the story of a Strange Dream.)

It's 8.40am now, been up for a short while, eventhough I didn't get to bed until 1 (normally I try to get 8 hours sleep). Hoping this bloody courier WILL show up today, feel like calling their office, just to check- "hey, whaddaboudit?" Ugh.

Had the weirdest dream last night. I don't think it happened in logical order, and for the first time I've dreamt of falling. Okay, scenes from last night's movie.

* overslept at my mum's house - dunno, I think their was something weird to it, probably really late or something. So were running about there, hurrying, both thinking of excuses (i.e., I remember us talking)

* at work we had a meeting, and afterwards, we "visited" different magazines (editorial dptmnts). It took quite a while. I think Annemarie T, Annemiek vB and Elly G were there, too. I remember thinking: Petra must be wondering where I am (her being my colleague)

*I was wondering about in the hallways of some floors above ours. I noticed a double bed on the left, with colourful sheets or duvets. Obviously someone slept there that night. Then I noticed other rooms being empty. Then I noticed a hospital smell, and saw hospital like rooms. I turned around and saw a nurse at the other end of the hallway, pushing a.. what's the word. Not stretcher... Like that's what they would do, after the men's mags have moved back to our old office?? Rent it out to a hospital in need of extra rooms?!

*We all got on the elevator (we=the ones touring several ed. dep.). We immediately noticed it going way too fast (downwards). I found myself hit against the ceiling. Others were screaming. When we landed, I was lying on top of the others. I was worried about the girl on the bottom. My arm hurt, but it wasn't broken. The elevator stopped about a meter below its normal level. People were watching (this elevator is made out of glass-for real, I mean). I dialled for help, got a man on the phone. -> This part I recognize - when there was a fire a floor below me, people were standing on their balconies watching (even before I realized the apartment below me was ablaze!) yet I had to call the fire dept, after at least another 10 minutes had passed.

Anyway, v weird dream. Don't know what it says about me, although I've got a clue about the tour. And perhaps the falling bit? What about that hospital??

It's 9am, gotto run.

Sun!

It's magic what sunlight does to my mood. Suddenly I see possibilities within my present situation. Alright, so I won't get a new job. Alright, I'm not gonna emigrate any time soon. I should just highlight the days I'm not pining away in a distant office building! Didn't Gert already tell me that weeks ago? Sometimes I just need to remind myself of that...

Sport definitely was a beam of sunlight today as well! Speedskating was very cool - for the first time in 30 years, we've got a female worldchampion allround! Very very impressed.

Go Renate! (c) ANP

Also - sorry, Patrick! - Ajax beat PSV 2-1. For the first time EVER they took all three points during a competition game in this stadium! Playing PSV, that is. So Ajax might have fucked up their European changes, and won't be able to get the Dutch double anymore either (coz they got kicked out for the cup as well, aagh), they're still in the lead for the championship! Yihaaa!

So my congrats to Renate Groenewold and all da boyz of Ajax!

Thx Raymond for inviting me to come to the beach with him, Floris and little Emma. Would've been a perfect day for a stroll down the beach, being as windy as it is outthere! (Would've -> I stayed at home, trying to get this pigsty to look slightly better.)

PS
Kind of weird to write this happy happy, when at the same time, everything I wrote at 1.20am still matters.

SCOTLAND PART 3

This afternoon I got to pick up the first roll of pics of Edinburgh. Quite a few cool ones of either the city, or the people I spent the days with: Julie, Tristan, Duncan, Chris, Catherine, Ilona. Loved the last pic on this roll: D, C, C and Ilona are standing in the woods, it's snowwhite, the trees and people are dark, almost black. In the background you see the lake, which is frozen over. Should have gotten this roll on cd as well. Don't feel like scanning them, ugh!

That stroll in the woods was on saturday, after we had a lurrrrvely breakfast at our b and b! That man working there was so cute, almost nervous, trying to do things the best way (he was married, but I'm not so sure he's straight). Had a really nice view - two Ozzies, v. yummie ;-)

Some of us had poached eggs, I had 'm scrambled. And the bacon on the side, oh, it was so good. Got a nice pic of that breakfast (the one I took of the raspberry crumble sucks!).

We drove up to Inverness to get some shopping done: it was a byo party. I got 4 bottles of Grolsch (I know...), worrying a little whether it'd be enough (didn't wanna get 12!). Also bought some bread, cheese, salami.

For lunch we hunted down (it was quite a search!) a fish and chips place. I decided on having the f and c as well, but I'm never gonna eat it again. The chips just about stink, and the fish is nothing short of boring. Afterwards you're stuffed, but it's not a nice way of being stuffed (like after eating at Moulin!!). Am never gonna try it again, it doesn't do it for me at all (rather have a cheesecake, ha!).

Inverness is quite a depressing town. The very small centre was lively, but when you enter it, it's all grey. It reminded me of Belgian cities. It doesn't breathe happiness. Do I make any sense? Maybe not. I'm glad we got to walk around a lot, trying to find that silly f and c place. Got to see a bit more of this city.

We were at Carbisdale Castle before dark, actually, we were the first guests to arrive! And 3rd on the list of travelling the longest way (one canadian beat us, and I guess Erin beat us too, although she also flew in from Amsterdam with her tres cute boyfriend Andy, she lives in Frankfurt).

Erin is great, she's a laugh! And she and Andy are (from the looks of it) so right for each other. They seemed to genuinely enjoy each other's company. They laugh a lot. Good vibes!

Catherine and Chris were a perfect couple too, they are so incredibly NICE. Catherine looks pretty in all the pics I took, and Chris looks exactly as I remember him - which suprised me, coz most people look different in pictures. I could easily spent a full week with them, no problem.

Just look at the entrance hall (statue gallery) of this Castle:

Don't you just love it??

Er...guess I'm boring y'all, haha. Life's a b!
Which reminds me - that convo I had yesterday went very well, but no change in life for me. I'm gonna have to cope with whatever it is I'm doing right now. Do have to think of a change of direction though, can't continue this way much longer. I need a change. So I might leave my job and/or this country at some point after all. If it wasn't for Borus and latte's and being indecisive for a few other reasons as well... Victor once said - if you're not happy yourself, it doesn't matter where you're going. True. But I do think I could be happier elsewhere.

Anyway. This is just all loads of BS, never mind, fuhgeddaboudit.

We chose a room in the castle only to find out there was an Ingenious Plan. So we bring our key cards back, and wait for this IP to pop up. Guess what. We had chosen the very room they had booked us in. Ilona: "spooky!!!!!"
Hey, this IS a HAUNTED castle, remember?

Ugh, I'm thirsty. So I'm gonna keep you dangling, the movie goes black (or white) here for a mo. Picture us, in a haunted castle... And there are about 220 people to come and party!

Ha, it almost sounds like a cliffhanger (very very tongue in cheek).

Fuck, I wish I was in Starbucks. Friedrichsstrasse. Gimme a suite!

This is were the party was being held, btw:

PS
Perfect floor for some Gaelic dancing. Strip the Willow or something (Duncan said I should not consider it for couples, but this Willow thingy definitely was very much a couple thing if you'd ask my opinion), but also a few others. One of those I got to dance with Duncan, it was great! I'm glad he convinced me to come dance with him, coz it was the only Gaelic dance I got to do. Apart from that Willow dance, the others didn't dance much (or at all) either. After two hours of Gaelic, it was salsa time! And there was a dj after that. Got to talk to the trumpet guy of this salsa band, he was delighted to hear where I came from, he loves Asd, spent several periods of time here, adding up to over half a year. This salsa band enjoyed themselves as much, possibly more, than the crowd, haha.

This PS I wrote after midnight. I'm still on msn. I should go to bed. I no, i no...

Goodnight sweetheart, well, it's time to go...
I hate to leave you but I really must say
Goodnight, sweetheart, goodni-ight...

This corny song is one of the songs in my jukebox. Keeps popping up in my head every now and then. Just like "Love should make it right...." or something and "Allright it's over..." (both Solbakken). And "Well you're my friend... That's what you told me, anyway..." (BPB).

"We're caught in a trap
I can't walk out"

Gotto go to bed! (Gotto get and again and again, I am what I am and I'm playing my game -> thnk G that one's not in my JB!).

SCOTLAND PART 2 (and some intermezzo´s)

On friday we left for our roadtrip; via Stirling (to check out Duncan´s old university!) to er... Don´t remember the name, oops. Spent the nigt at a b and b there, what luxury! I had a double bed all to myself... Very cool. Went to have dinner at a very, very cool place called Moulin. We had a main course, and then decided on having dessert as well. I chose a raspberry crumble with ice and it was D. E. Licious!

Went home around 10pm, we all felt like having a good night sleep. At the B and B I tuned in on Channel 4 right on time: episode 87 of SatC was about to start! A good thing I've been reading my HBO, for I pretty much knew what was goin' on. While eating the chocolate cheesecake I had bought at Starbucks (try some while you´re in Berlin, M!!) I enjoyed a new episode.

Smith turns out to be a man you can really count on... (c) HBO.

INTERMEZZO 1:
Monday I read the episode guide up to episode 91, in which Samantha looks stunning for a not so v. cool reason, but hey, won't spoil anything else here, just a peak thru this pic (sorry Vido, I know you don't give a shit about this S a/t C stuff):

Smith and Sam on a red carpet (c) HBO.

INTERMEZZO 2:
Booked myself two free tickets to Lost in Translation, I might ask my mum to go with me, coz I booked them near her place (good thinking, Sheila!) (haha).

Nice still. (c) Lost in Translation (or smthng).

It´s feb 15, day after Valentine´s, but no Valentine for me this year, hence the inviting mum bit. Actually asked my brother first, but he´s too busy with his twins (also a family party during the afternoon). I might end up asking Ciaron to come along. Or just drag a cutie of the Groninger street (as if).

The movie. (c) Lost in Translation (or smthng).

INTERMEZZO 3:
I´m getting sick by the way, spending hours with a sneezing Duncan probably is the very reason I´ve got a sore throat and my ears are popping and my nose is not working properly and... Hope I´ll be charming as ever (ahem!) tomorrow though... Aaagh! (Hope Dunc´s feeling better by now! He had to drive the whole way, poor man...)

Here´s another cultural event, have to admit I ain´t got no tickets, but just look at it! Definitely reminds me of... the book I bought in Edinburgh - what else?! "Spank me!" (Totally innocent quote of - I think? - Madonna.)

The movie. (c) Toneelgroep Amsterdam.

Scotland, Scotland

Wednesday I left for a few days (almost a week) to... er, yeah, SCOTLAND. (That must've come as a surprise.) Since this is supposed to be my year of firsts, I'll mention a few here:

* Scotland
* B & B (I had a double bed all to myself, plus my v. own bathroom)
* Haggis roll, Creme Egg, Chocolate Cheese Cake (INCREDIBLE), 3rd shot of espresso in my Grande Caramel Macchiato, Indian Takeaway (which we used to pronounce the Maori way back in NZ) (I should start travelin' again, it's getting a little sad, all these trips down the same memory lane, sorry dudes) (that's my rug!)
* night at a castle (haunted no less!)

Booked a night in a hostel way out of town, they said on the internet "there's a time to rough it, and a time to take things easy" and promised they'd come and pick you up from the airport. So I booked. Confirmation promised the same. When I asked them to come pick me up, they said: "go to the train station, give us a call, and we'll tell you what to do, then". Yeah right. Fuck off. That was pretty much the only usp that got me making that booking in the first place! So don't go to Globetrotter's Inn!

Took the shuttle (open return ticket 5 bucks) into town. A guy told me where to find a hostel, about 2 min away. V. v. cool. He even took a few minutes to show me where to go. One odd thing: he said I might not have liked it at Globetrotter's anyway. Lowering his voice: "A lot of gays there." I thought I must have not heard him right. "Excuse me?" "Homosexuals." (Reminds me of a girl I thought I was friends with, she always referred to gays as homosexuals, that was funny.) I looked at him and said: "I don't have any problems with gays." He seemed quite taken aback by my answer. D'oh. Petra thinks he might have meant I wouldn´t be able to pick up a potential love interest. Hm... Anyway, his idea to go to Edinburgh Backpackers was v. good!!

The feel of the place was great. Only... Edinburgh Backpackers was by far the dirtiest place I've stayed. The macaroni shaped thingy under my bed was there when I got in wednesday eve, and when I got back to the same bed (room 3, bed F), it was still there!

First night I met Julie from Canada, we went out for some dinner and we walked the Royal Mile (started out with walking towards the castle, really cool view, then back towards the palace, then halfway back to cockburn street).

Thursday I walked down Princes Str, got lunch at Pret-a-Manger, ate some on a bench, then to Starbucks for a Caramel Macchiato. Got a chocolate fudge brownie and a chocolate cheesecake to go before I left. Ate the brownie in the park overlooking the city (too lazy to look up its name). It was awesome, sitting there on a bench on your own, it was really windy, so cool...

Bought 6 books for the total amount of 8 pounds that day! One with a v. kinky title, I don´t remember, but that´s alright ;-)

Back at the hostel I met Tristan, he was sleeping in room 3 like Julie and me. The three of us went out for coffee at Starbucks, Julie didn't drink anything, she's not a coffee girl. She's great though! Tristan's from Melbourne, OZ, he just finished his first year at uni.

At 10pm I got a text from Duncan, he was coming into town. Me and Julie went to pick him up. He was taller than I remembered, so I didn't recognize him. Plus, he was talking to Chris and Catherine, and I didn't know them yet. Turned out C and C live pretty much around the corner from my hostel, and Duncan and Ilona booked their hotel in the same area as well - changing hostels was a very good decision!

Texted Tristan where we were, so he could come join us after he played his game of pool (which he lost, haha - sorry, it's just, he said he was gonna beat the winner of the game that was being played, so that's quite funny). At midnite we got kicked out of the pub, right before Duncan appeared behind the windows with Ilona next to him (he had left to go and pick her up from the airport). Julie went to bed, the four of us went to pub 2. I drank 70s, which had something to do with the size of the barrel and the taxes being paid. Nice beer.

So what I'm being Ms Wordy again! Don't forget, that after all, this IS my diary, right!
And I´ll get back to you... with even MORE! Yihaa!

Been home for about an hour now, after hugging my beloved Borus for 15 minutes, I got some tea, listened to my voicemail (my cellphone went comatose on me - battery empty), browsed most of the 68 new messages in my inbox (funny, my boarding umber today was 68).

Edinburgh was awesome... The trip up to Highlands was great... The trip actually was even better than the party itself! This castle is close to Tain, if you care to look it up.

So... remember the letter I had to write, combined with the V. Important Phonecall? They left a message on my voicemail this morning... Waaah.... Gonna call them tomorrow morning. RAAAAGH!

This IS exciting... Woah!

Have to call a courier now. Will get back to you...

Man, it feels like I've been away for a holiday, not just a long weekend. So cool to be back in a hostel again. Very big smile on my face.
